Tar Heels Win 4-1 At VCU
October 15, 2017 | Field Hockey
RICHMOND, Va. – North Carolina scored two goals in the first half and added two more in the second en route to a 4-1 field hockey win at VCU on Sunday afternoon. The fifth-ranked Tar Heels improved to 12-3 with the road victory at Cary Street Field.
"I'm very proud of team," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "They played a tough ACC game yesterday and it's difficult to play back-to-back, especially with one of those games on the road. VCU made us work for this win and the fact that we came away with four goals is good."
VCU fell to 10-5 with the loss.
UNC scored on its first two penalty corners of the day, in the 19th and 21st minutes. The first was by sophomore Marissa Creatore, who deflected in a shot by junior Malin Evert. Just over two minutes later, Evert sent a rocket into the cage, assisted by sophomore Eef Andriessen on the insert and junior Eva van't Hoog on the stick stop.
After halftime, the Tar Heels added two more. UNC's third goal of the day also came on a penalty corner, on a deflection by van't Hoog. Freshman Meredith Sholder had the assist in the 47th minute.
The final goal day for Carolina came in the 53rd minute, when Creatore sent a pass through the circle and redshirt freshman Kathryn Holland directed it into the cage from the far post.
VCU's goal came on a penalty corner in the 54th minute.
Redshirt freshman Amanda Hendry and sophomore Alex Halpin each played a half at goalkeeper for UNC. A total of 21 Tar Heels saw playing time in the win.
Carolina is back in action on Friday for the final Atlantic Coast Conference game of the regular season. The Tar Heels take on Duke at the Blue Devils' Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium in Durham, N.C.
