Warren, Yankees Open Playoffs With Wild Card Win
October 4, 2017 | Baseball
Tuesday night's 8-4 win by the New York Yankees in the American League Wild Card Game kicked off the 2017 MLB Postseason, and former North Carolina standout Adam Warren is one of four Tar Heels on teams that made the playoffs this season.
Warren and the Yankees finished 91-71 in the regular season and will now face the Cleveland Indians in the ALDS. The right-hander from New Bern who won 32 games from 2006-09 at UNC was 3-2 with a 2.35 ERA in 46 appearances this season for the Yankees.
Cleveland, last year's AL champion, features 2006 National Pitcher of the Year and all-time Carolina great Andrew Miller. Miller, who is one of just four Tar Heels to have his number retired at Boshamer Stadium, was once again one of the best relievers in all of baseball in 2017. The 2016 ALCS MVP posted a 1.44 ERA and struck out 95 batters in 62.2 innings of work for the Central Division champions. The New York-Cleveland series begins Thursday at Progressive Field.
Infielder Colin Moran appeared in seven games for the AL West champion Houston Astros. The All-American third baseman at UNC suffered a freak injury shortly after being called up this summer, but was able to return late in the season. To read more about his recovery and return, click here.
In the National League, veteran catcher Chris Iannetta and the Arizona Diamondbacks host Colorado Wednesday night in the NL Wild Card Game. Iannetta shined in his first season with the D-Backs, clubbing 17 home runs and driving in 43 runs in 89 games. The winner of the Arizona-Colorado contest will face the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS.Â
