CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Four Tar Heel field hockey players have been named to the Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division I All-South Region squads, announced on Monday. UNC juniors Malin Evert, Ashley Hoffman and Eva van't Hoog were named to the All-Region first team, and senior Gab Major was named to the second team.
All four Tar Heels are repeat honorees. Hoffman was named to the first-team for the second year after earning second-team honors as a freshman. Evert and van't Hoog earned second-team honors last year, and van't Hoog also was on the second team as a freshman. Major was named to the second team in her sophomore season.
Evert, from Bad Schwartau, Germany, started all season in the midfield. She finished with 11 goals, tied for the team lead, and 24 points. She was named second team All-ACC, All-ACC Tournament and All-NCAA Tournament.
Hoffman, from Mohnton, Pa., started at center back and tied with Evert for the team lead with 11 goals. She was the ACC Defensive Player of the Year and was named ACC Tournament MVP as the Tar Heels claimed the conference crown.
Major, from Royersford, Pa., started at forward and led the team in scoring with eight goals and a team-best 14 assists. She was the only senior on the 2017 roster and served as a co-captain, along with Hoffman.
Van't Hoog, from Den Haag, Netherlands, started in the midfield and had seven goals and 12 assists. She also was named All-ACC, All-ACC Tournament and All-NCAA Tournament.
A total of 160 players were recognized on first and second teams in the five NFHCA regions: Mid-Atlantic, Mideast, Northeast, South and West. For the full list of all-region honorees, click here.
