Rebounding Edge Leads Carolina Over Hartford

CHAPEL HILL - Freshman Janelle Bailey scored a season-high 25 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to pace North Carolina to a 90-70 victory over Hartford on Friday afternoon inside Carmichael Arena.
The victory was No. 995 for North Carolina head coach Sylvia Hatchell, moving her within five of reaching 1,000 career victories.
Bailey registered her third double-double of the season, and second in as many games for North Carolina (5-2). Senior Jamie Cherry tossed in 19 points, junior Paris Kea added 14 points and seven assists and sophomore Taylor Koenen had 11.
Sierra DaCosta scored a game-high 26 points for Hartford (3-4). Darby Lee and Lindsey Abad each finished with 11 points.
An 10-0 fourth-quarter run by the Tar Heels opened up a tightly-contested affair as Carolina won its third game in a row. Bailey scored on back-to-back possessions in the spurt to lift her club over a pesky Hawks club from the America East Conference.
It was total domination on the glass for UNC. A 57-24 rebounding advantage led to Carolina holding a 23-4 edge in second-chance points.
Carolina, the top shooting team in the ACC, came out firing once again in the first quarter, knocking down 55.0 percent of its shots to take a 27-14 lead. Kea delivered six assists alone in the opening 10 minutes, consistently setting up her teammates with open shots.
The second quarter was a knock-down drag-out affair with neither team finding their scoring touch. A bevy of whistles and missed buckets saw Hartford outscore the Tar Heels by a slim 18-16 margin, however, UNC still took a 43-31 lead into halftime.
Hartford hung around and was down by only six, 71-65, with 6:39 to play, but Carolina outscored the Hawks by a 19-5 mark the rest of the way to close out the win.
The Tar Heels host Appalachian State on Sunday at 5:30 p.m.
