Ivory Latta will always be closely associated with the game of basketball. A collegiate All-American at North Carolina and later a two-time WNBA all-star with the Washington Mystics, Latta recently added a new line to her career biography as the writer and publisher of a children's book.
Earlier this month, Latta's autobiographical children's book "Despite the Height," written with acclaimed author Charles R. Smith, went on sale. The story tells how Latta overcame many obstacles in her way to become an elite athlete despite her diminutive size.
Latta told Ava Wallace of the Washington Post, "It's something that I've wanted to do for a long time. I finally put the pieces together and got a great team behind me that's going to be out there promoting the book for me. I'm really just spreading my word."
Despite the Height is the lively, true story of Latta, one of the smallest women to play for the WNBA. This full-color illustrated book for young readers follows young Ivory as she learns to play basketball, perfect her game, and outplay her big brothers – all despite her height. The book includes a dream journal to help motivate students and inspire conversation.
Now a veteran that is playing in her 11th season in the WNBA, Latta is averaging 9.0 points per game for the Mystics.
Despite the Height is available for purchase through Warren Publishing and on Amazon.
