Four Tar Heels Start World Cup Quest July 13

The U.S. vies for the World Cup July 13-22.
CHAPEL HILL–Four University of North Carolina products will be among the 19 active players on the United States roster seeking the 2017 Women's World Cup July 13-22 in Guildford, England. Rising Tar Heel senior midfielder Marie McCool will join Carolina graduates defender Kristen Carr (UNC 2010), defender Jen Russell (UNC '10) and midfielder Laura Zimmerman (UNC '13) on the American squad seeking its third World Cup in a row and its eighth world championship.
McCool is one of two current college players on the team, joining USC goalie Gussie Johns, also a rising senior.
The U.S. women's national team, the two-time defending world champion, will open play at the 2017 FIL Women's Lacrosse World Cup on July 13 against Scotland. The event, which is taking place July 12-22 at Surrey Sports Park in Guildford, England, includes 25 nations. All games will be streamed live online.
The opening ceremony will kick off the event on July 12, followed by host England playing Wales on the championship field at 6 p.m.
The U.S. will participate in Pool A with Australia, Canada, England, Scotland and Wales. After opening against Scotland, Team USA will play on consecutive days from July 14-16 against Australia, England and Canada before earning a day off on July 17. The U.S. women will finish pool play with a match against Wales on July 18.
Play-in games begin on July 18 with quarterfinals and semifinals occurring on July 19 and 20, respectively. The medal-round games are scheduled for July 22. See below for a complete schedule for the U.S. women's national team.
