CHAPEL HILL—The University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team will take another step toward the 2018 regular season when it opens preseason practice on Thursday afternoon.
Carolina returns 21 letterwinners and five starters from the 2017 team that won the Atlantic Coast Conference regular season and tournament championships for the second consecutive year.
Head coach Jenny Levy, the third-winningest coach in the sport's history, is back for her 23rd season as the Tar Heel head coach. Levy is also the new head coach of the United States National Team, having been named to the position in November.
Senior midfielder Marie McCool returns in 2018 as one of the most decorated players in the nation. McCool is a two-time All-America and All-ACC pick who also won the ACC Midfielder of the Year award and was one of five finalsts for the Tewaaraton Award in 2017. She was one of two undergraduate players on the National Team that won a gold medal at the World Cup last summer in England.
Also returning to the midfield is 2017 third-team All-America Ela Hazar, who set a UNC record for assists last year with 40.
Other key Tar Heels in 2018 should include midfielder Maggie Bill, who missed all but 12 games last season due to injury, as well as key defender Erin Kelly, sophomore midfielder Katie Hoeg, juniors Charlotte Sofield and Kara Klages and the top-rated incoming freshman class in the nation.
Team captains for 2018 are McCool, Kelly, Sofield and senior Naomi Lerner.
The Tar Heels must fill holes left by the graduation of a large 2017 senior class that included ACC Attacker of the Year Molly Hendrick, one of the top goalies in the nation in Caylee Waters and All-Americas Sammy Jo Tracy, Maggie Auslander and Sydney Holman, among others.
Once again, the schedule is one of the most challenging slates of games in the nation, including the always rigorous ACC campaign, as well as non-conference dates against national powers Maryland, Florida and Northwestern.
Carolina is scheduled to play its 2018 home games at Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill. Fetzer Field, the Tar Heels' longtime home, is undergoing major renovations during the 2017-18 academic year and will return as UNC's home field for the 2019 season. In the meantime, the women's lacrosse squad will host games in the home stadium of the Carolina football team.
The 2018 season opener is scheduled for Feb. 10 at James Madison.
