JMU Downs Tar Heels in 2OT, 15-14

HARRISONBURG, VA.—Kristen Gaudian scored a man-down goal at the 1:53 mark of the second overtime period to lift 16th-ranked James Madison to a 15-14, double-overtime win over third-ranked North Carolina on Saturday afternoon in the season opener for both teams.
Senior All-America Marie McCool led the way for the Tar Heels with four goals, one assist and eight draw controls. Ela Hazar had a goal and three assists and Katie Hoeg scored three times. Kara Klages had a goal and an assist, and Ally Mastroianni, Taylor McDaniels, Jamie Ortega, Scottie Rose Growney and Gianna Bowe each scored once.
JMU got five goals apiece from Gaudian and Elena Romesburg, as well as two goals and an assist from Hanna Haven.
Carolina scored first in the opening four minutes of the game when Hazar scored off an assist from McCool. The teams traded goals in the first 13 minutes and UNC led, 3-2, before the Dukes scored three consecutive goals to take a 5-3 lead with 10:33 left in the half.
The Tar Heels responded by going on a 5-2 run to grab back the lead, 8-7, by halftime.
In the second half, JMU took a 12-9 lead with a 4-0 run, holding the Tar Heels scoreless for over nine minutes.
The Tar Heels went on a 5-0 run to retake the lead. Growney broke the Dukes' run with a goal with 17:07 to play, then McCool scored her third goal of the game to make it 12-11. Bowe followed with a goal off of Hazar's third assist of the day to tie the score at 12-all, and Hoeg scored a minute later for a 13-12 advantage. McCool's fourth goal made it 14-12 with 5:29 left to play.
JMU stopped the Tar Heel run with 4:38 to go, then tied it at 14-all with 1:26 remaining on the clock. Gaudian scored the game-winner at the 1:53 mark of the second OT.
Elise Hennessey made her first career start in goal for Carolina and made three saves while allowing seven goals in the first half. Redshirt freshman Taylor Moreno played the second half and overtime, recording nine saves, including a big save as time expired to send the game into overtime. Moreno allowed seven goals.
Ellie Harmeyer started in goal for the Dukes and allowed 10 goals with two saves in 42:53 of action. Molly Dougherty played the final 24:14 and made eight saves while allowing four goals to pick up the victory in goal.
The Tar Heels will return to action next Friday evening at High Point before playing their home opener on Sunday Feb. 18 against Liberty.
