Carolina Downed At Georgia Tech, 79-61
February 15, 2018 | Women's Basketball
ATLANTA - A 22-2 first-quarter run by Georgia Tech was the difference in a 79-61 victory over North Carolina on Thursday evening from McCamish Pavillion.
Paris Kea scored a team-high 15 points before fouling out for the first time all season in the final minute of regulation for North Carolina (14-12, 4-9 Atlantic Coast Conference). Jamie Cherry had 12 points and Janelle Bailey notched her 10th double-double of her outstanding rookie campaign with an even 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Francesca Pan, the 2017 ACC Freshman of the Year, finished two points shy of her career-high with 24 points. Reserves Chanin Scott and Kierra Fletcher tossed in 11 and 10 points, respectively as Georgia Tech (16-11, 5-9) received 35 points from its bench compared to 10 for the Tar Heels.
Bailey scored the Tar Heels' opening five points, but any momentum by the visitors was dampened severely by a 22-2 run over a five minute, 53 second span that allowed the Yellow Jackets to gain a 26-11 advantage heading into the second period.
Pan had 16 points by halftime, a primary reason Georgia Tech held a 47-26 lead after 20 minutes of play. The Jackets also turned nine Tar Heel miscues into 14 points to open up their decisive lead.
UNC showed it had some fight left by opening the second half with a 10-2 run, closing the gap to 49-36. Taylor Koenen and Jaelynn Murray each had four points in the spurt.
Still within striking distance of the Yellow Jackets, Carolina went scoreless the final 2:17 of the third quarter to fall behind 62-40.
The fourth quarter played out similar as the third did for the Tar Heels, scoring the first eight points to get within 14 points, 62-48. But, Pan would strike again with a huge triple that helped send Georgia Tech to victory.
Carolina returns home to welcome No. 4 Louisville to Carmichael Arena on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
