McCool, Ortega Lead Tar Heels By Liberty, 23-4

CHAPEL HILL—Seventh-ranked North Carolina got seven goals from senior Marie McCool and five from freshman Jamie Ortega to beat Liberty, 23-4, on Sunday afternoon at Kenan Stadium.
McCool tied her career high with the seven goals that came on just eight shots. She also added four draw controls. McCool also scored seven goals against Louisville in 2017. The school record for goals in a game is eight, set by Kellie Thompson in 2002.
Ortega scored five goals on seven shots in her first career home game.
With the win, the Tar Heels improved to 2-1 this season and won their second game of the weekend after also winning 14-10 at High Point on Friday. Liberty fell to 1-1.
The game was played at Kenan Stadium, home of the football Tar Heels, while UNC's longtime lacrosse facility, Fetzer Field, is under renovations this season.
UNC's 23 goals were one off the school record of 24 set in 2007 versus Longwood and 2014 against Canisius.
Eight Carolina players scored goals in the game, led by McCool and Ortega. Katie Hoeg (two goals and three assists) and Ela Hazar (one goal and three assists) also had big games for the Tar Heels. Ally Mastroianni scored three times and Olivia Ferrucci had a goal and two assists. Gianna Bowe and Kara Klages each scored twice and Marisa DiVietro had two assists.
Liberty got a goal and an assist from Abby Britton and single goals from Carly White, Grace Fletcher and Jenna Joyal.
Carolina out-shot the Flames, 38-8, and won 20 of the game's 28 draws. The Tar Heels forced 13 turnovers while committing just seven miscues, holding Liberty to just four successful clears in 11 attempts.
Elise Hennessey started her third consecutive game and picked up the win in goal for Carolina, playing the first half and allowing just one goal while making two saves. Redshirt freshman Taylor Moreno played the second half and allowed three goals with two saves.
The Tar Heels started the game with four free position goals in the opening four-plus minutes, forcing a Flames timeout. It was off to the races from there for Carolina, which ran out to a 15-1 lead by halftime. McCool scored six first-half goals.
UNC eventually led by as many as 20 goals at 21-1 before Liberty scored three of the game's final five goals.
Carolina will return to action next Saturday against top-ranked Maryland.
