Tar Heels take down High Point 10-0
February 27, 2018 | Baseball
Chapel Hill, N.C. – No. 13 North Carolina captured its first home win of the season after defeating High Point 10-0. Six Tar Heel pitchers held High Point to two hits while Kip Brandenburg, Michael Busch and Cody Roberts combined for eight of the 10 Carolina RBIs.
Kyle Datres got the Heels on the board in the fourth inning thanks to an infield single and two defensive errors from High Point that advanced him to third. A wild throw from the shortstop to first base was followed up with another defensive error on the first baseman trying to throw out Datres at second, allowing him to end up at third base. In the next at bat, Michael Busch hit a sacrifice fly to left field to give the Heels the 1-0 lead.
Carolina finally broke open the game in the fifth inning as they scored five runs thank to two big hits from Busch and Cody Roberts to give the Heels the lead, 6-0. Earl Semper and Zack Gahagan started the inning with back-to-back walks before Ike Freeman bunted down the first base line to advance everyone and load the bases. After a Brandon Riley fielders choice brought home one runner, Datres walked to load the bases for Busch who hit a line drive to right field to score two more. After a defensive error put runners on second and third, Roberts hit a shot to left field that scored the final two runners of the inning for the 6-0 lead.
The Heels tacked on four more runs in the eighth. Freemen was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and to make it 7-0 before Brandenburg cemented the game with double to left field to clear the bases and give Carolina the 10-0 lead.
Caden O'Brien picked up his first win as a Tar Heel after going 1.2 innings while conceding no hits or runs.
Carolina improves to 4-5 on the season and will host its first three-game series at home this weekend against Liberty. The first game of the series on Friday will begin at 3 p.m. with the following games on Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
