Ten Former Tar Heels Dot WPLL Rosters

CHAPEL HILL—Ten former University of North Carolina players dot the rosters of teams in the Women's Professional Lacrosse League (WPLL). The new league announced a list of 16 players joining the league on Wednesday for its inaugural season in 2018, including former Tar Heel Aly Messinger (New England Command).
The addition of these players brings each team's roster to 20, allowing five remaining spots for 2018 graduates that will be selected during April's 2018 College Draft.
"We are very excited to welcome these new players to the WPLL," explained league Commissioner Jen Adams. "Their accomplishments, including World Cup and national championships, speak for themselves. The addition of these new players makes the WPLL the most competitive lacrosse league the world has ever seen."
After initially drafting 100 players in August, some athletes were unable to commit to the 2018 season. To remedy this, WPLL general managers and coaches recently took part in a draft involving players that had previously expressed interest in joining the league. Each team now fields a 20-player roster, which will grow to 25 players after the college draft in April.
The WPLL, which will play it's first season this summer, is made up of five teams: the Baltimore Brave, New England Command, New York Fight, Philadelphia Fire, and Upstate Pride. Athletes in the league are some of the top players in the world of lacrosse, having earned 115 All-America awards and eight Tewaaraton trophies. Thirty-four WPLL players have won NCAA championships and the league includes nine current members of the U.S. National Team that won the 2017 FIL World Cup.
Among the Tar Heels in WPLL, goalie Caylee Waters was the No. 1 overall pick in the draft by the Philadelphia Fire. Other Tar Heels picked in the August draft include defender Kristen Carr (No. 16 overall), defender Courtney Waite (No. 21), midfielder Laura Zimmerman (No. 26), midfielder Kara Cannizzaro (No. 58), attacker Sammy Jo Tracy (No. 66), midfielder Carly Reed (No. 82), defender Amber (Falcone) McKenzie (No. 89) and defender Lindsay Scott (No. 98).
Messinger was the top overall pick in Wednesday's supplemental draft.
Carolina's 10 players on WPLL rosters are tied with Northwestern for second-most among any program in the nation behind Maryland's 16. No other college program has more than six players on WPLL rosters.
