
No. 13 Heels combine for 11 hits, take down No. 8 Louisville 10-3

Louisville, Ky. – No. 13 North Carolina hands No. 8 Louisville their first loss of the season as they picked up the big 10-3 win on Sunday afternoon at Jim Patterson Stadium. Cody Roberts, Zack Gahagan and Ike Freeman went a combined 7 for 10 at the plate with six runs scored and six RBI to give the Heels its first ACC win of the season. Daniels picked up the win after tossing 4.1 innings of scoreless baseball only giving up two hits while striking out six Cardinals.
For the third game in a row the Heels jumped out to the early lead on the Cardinals thanks to a two out single from Ike Freeman for the 1-0 lead in the second inning. Cody Roberts started the two-out rally with a double down the left field line before Freeman brought him home with a single over second base to give the Heels the lead.
Just like Saturday afternoon, the Cardinals responded immediately with a run of its own in the bottom of the second with to back-to-back doubles from Logan Wyatt and Drew Campbell to tie the game, 1-1.
With two outs in the third inning, the Cardinals tacked on two more runs to take the 3-1 lead. A Jake Snider double opened the door for Louisville and after back-to-back walks for Devin Mann and Wyatt, a single from Justin Lavey found its way past a diving Kyle Datres and Ike Freeman to plate two Cardinals.
The Heels made it a one run game in the top of the fourth as Ashton McGee scored on a sacrifice fly from Zack Gahagan to make it 3-2. After McGee walked to start the inning Roberts delivered another big hit with a single to center field. Freeman followed with a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners in to scoring position before Gahagan's deep fly ball to center brought home McGee.
Carolina went back on top in the seventh inning after two Tar Heels scored for the 4-3 advantage. Once again, Roberts was involved as he led off the inning with a walk before being advanced to second on Ike Freeman's fielders choice to second. Gahagan continued his hot day at the plate with a double over the head of the left fielder to score Roberts for the 3-3 tie. Enwiller followed with a single over the head of the second baseman to bring home Gahagan to give the Heels the 4-3 lead.
The Tar Heels broke the game open in the eighth with a six-run inning to take a 10-3 lead. Busch started the eighth with a walk before Dallas Tessar laid down a sacrifice bunt in his first at bat and reached base safely after a throwing error from the Cardinal third baseman to put two runners on. Roberts continued his near perfect day at the plate with a line drive past the third baseman to load the bases with one out. Freeman added to his RBI total on the day with a single up the middle to score Busch and Tessar for the 6-3 lead. Gahagan kept things going with a double down the right field line that scored Roberts and moved Freeman to third, who scored on a wild pitch to bring the lead to 8-3. After an Enwiller walk, Riley came up with a two-strike double to clear the bases for the decisive 10-3 advantage.
Brett Daniels (2-0) saw appearances in all three games this weekend throwing 6.1 innings and only surrendering three hits while striking out six batters.
The Tar Heels will be back in action on Tuesday, March 13 at Boshamer Stadium to take on NC A&T at 4 p.m. ET. The Heels also have homes games on Wednesday, March 14 against Gardner-Webb at 4 p.m. ET and will host Pittsburgh this weekend in its first home ACC series of the season.
