Newton, Mass.—Second-ranked Boston College scored six consecutive goals late in the game and beat fifth-ranked North Carolina, 17-11, at the Newton Campus Soccer and Lacrosse Field on a chilly Saturday afternoon.
After Marie McCool scored back-to-back goals for Carolina to cut the BC lead to 11-10 with 13:46 to play in the second half, the Eagles went on a 6-0 run to put the game out of reach.
With the win, Boston College improved to 12-0 overall this season and 3-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. The Tar Heels fell to 6-3, 1-1.
Maggie Bill led Carolina with three goals and three assists on the day. McCool and Katie Hoeg each had two goals and an assist, and Jamie Ortega scored twice. Marisa DiVietro and Ally Mastroianni both scored once.
The Eagles got four goals and five assists from Sam Apuzzo, along with three goals and two assists from Emma Schurr and two goals and three assists from Dempsey Arsenault.
"Today's game was a competitive battle between two really talented teams," UNC head coach Jenny Levy said afterward. "Unfortunately we got ourselves into a tough situation, with 13:46 left in the 2nd half, a one goal game, we got called for a series of fouls. Man-down goals and a lack of possession on the draw really hurt us.
"Credit BC and specifically the play of Apuzzo and Arsenault, who really impacted the game all over the field. A tough loss but we will use it to get better and grow as a team."
BC took a quick, 2-0 lead in the opening minutes before the Tar Heels responded to tie it at 2-all with goals by Mastroianni and Bill. The Eagles retook the lead on a goal at the 15:24 mark of the first half, only to see Carolina score three in a row (two by Ortega, one by Bill) to take a 5-3 lead.
After the Tar Heel defense held BC scoreless for over 12 minutes, BC closed the first half on a 3-0 run to lead, 6-5, at the break.
In the second half, DiVietro tied it at 6-all off an assist from Bill before BC scored four of the next five goals to take a 10-7 lead and seize control with 19:40 to go. The Tar Heels scored three of the next four goals to cut it to 11-10, only to see BC score six goals in a row to seal the win.
Boston College out-shot Carolina by a 35-24 margin, won 17 of 27 draws on the day and controlled 17 ground balls to UNC's nine.
Elise Hennessey made her sixth start of the season in goal for Carolina and made 11 saves in 60 minutes. Lauren Daly started in the cage for the Eagles and made eight saves.
The Tar Heels will return to action on Wednesday at home against Virginia Tech, then will host Notre Dame next Saturday in Chapel Hill.
