Ferrucci's Late Goals Lead UNC Past Hokies, 13-12
March 28, 2018 | Women's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL—Olivia Ferrucci scored twice in a 31-second span in the final two minutes to lead the fifth-ranked North Carolina women's lacrosse team to a 13-12 win over No. 17 Virginia Tech at Kenan Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
After Carolina led early, 6-1, and by an 11-7 score with under 18 minutes to play in the second half, the Hokies rallied for five consecutive goals to take a 12-11 lead with 4:09 to go. Ferrucci scored unassisted with 1:57 left to tie it at 12-all, then took a pass from Katie Hoeg and scored with 1:26 remaining for the win.
Carolina two goals and four assists from Hoeg on the day, along with two goals, two assists and 11 draw controls from Marie McCool. Jamie Ortega and Ela Hazar both had two goals and one assist. Kara Klages, Taylor McDaniels and Marisa DiVietro all scored single goals.
Hazar became the first UNC player ever to record 100 career assists. She had 99 entering the game and now has 100 in her career. Hazar holds Carolina records for most assists in a game (eight), a season (40) and a career.
Tristan McGinley led Virginia Tech with four goals, while Emma Harden added three.
With the victory, Carolina improved to 7-3 overall this season and 2-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Virginia Tech fell to 9-4, 2-1. The Tar Heels also improved to 25-0 all-time against the Hokies, including 12-0 in games played in Chapel Hill.
"Credit to Virginia Tech for playing a great game today," UNC head coach Jenny Levy said afterward. "They play an aggressive style of offense and they come at you with a lot of different kids and are just dodging right down your gut. I thought we handled that pretty well for the most part today."
Carolina jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening five-plus minutes, forcing a Hokie timeout at the 24:21 mark. After a Hokie goal by Mary Claire Byrne, UNC scored three more in a row to take a 6-1 lead with 16:05 to go until the break. Virginia Tech closed the half on a 3-0 run, however, making the score 6-4 Tar Heels at halftime.
In the second half, Carolina scored three of the first four goals coming out of the locker room to take a 9-5 lead before eventually leading 11-7 after Hazar's goal with 17:41 left. The Hokies then went on their 5-0 run over the span of just under 10 minutes of game action prior to Ferrucci's two goals.
The Tar Heels will return to action on Saturday at noon against Notre Dame in Kenan Stadium.
