Big Second Half Leads Tar Heels To 20-11 Win At Syracuse
April 14, 2018 | Women's Lacrosse
SYRACUSE, N.Y.—Fifth-ranked North Carolina went on a 7-2 run in the second half and Kara Klages scored a career-high five goals in a 20-11 win at No. 15 Syracuse at the Carrier Dome on Saturday afternoon. Marie McCool added five goals, one assist and 12 draw controls for UNC, which won its fourth game in a row.
After Carolina led, 8-5, at halftime and Syracuse scored the first goal of the second half to cut its deficit to two goals, the Tar Heels went on their 7-2 run to take a 15-8 lead and seize the game's momentum. UNC outscored the Orange, 12-6, in the second half.
With the victory, Carolina improved to 10-3 overall this season and 5-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. UNC has won seven of its last eight outings. Syracuse fell to 8-7, 0-5.
"We are really happy with our performance today, a total team effort and a complete game," UNC head coach Jenny Levy said after the win. "We were presented with challenges and opportunities during the game, and it was great to see our players effectively make the necessary adjustments.
"We had great performances from many players. Specifically, Marie McCool and Kara Klages were absolutely dominant, Maggie Bill set the tone early in the game and really got us off to a great start."
Klages' five goals surpassed her previous career high of two set on four occasions over the last two seasons. McCool's five goals are the second-most she has scored this season, trailing only her seven-goal outburst against Liberty in February.
The Tar Heels also got a season-high four goals and one assist from Maggie Bill and two goals and three assists from Ela Hazar. Katie Hoeg scored once and dished out three assists, Jamie Ortega had two goals and an assist and Olivia Ferrucci had one goal and one assist.
Emily Hawryschuk led Syracuse with four goals, with Riley Donahue added two scores and two assists and Neena Merola chipping in two goals and one assist.
Carolina's 20 goals are the most it has ever scored against the Orange, and the nine-goal margin of victory is the biggest by either team in the 12-game history of the series (surpassing the seven-goal margin in UNC's 18-11 win in the 2017 ACC Tournament final).
Carolina dominated the draw, 23-10, getting six draw controls from Klages to go with McCool's dozen. UNC also out-shot Syracuse, 35-27.
Elise Hennessey (W, 7-2) went the distance in goal for Carolina and made 10 saves while allowing 11 goals. Asa Goldstock (L, 8-7) started for the Orange and took the loss in the cage, allowing 16 goals while making nine saves in 47:00 of action.
The Tar Heels will continue their weekend in Syracuse when they return to action tomorrow at Christian Brothers Academy at 11 a.m. against Canisius.
