Tar Heels Run By Canisius, 22-3

SYRACUSE, N.Y.—Fifth-ranked North Carolina (11-3) scored the final 14 goals of the game and rolled past Canisius (8-7) by a 22-3 score on Sunday at Christian Brothers Academy.
Ela Hazar led the Tar Heels with four goals and three assists, with Katie Hoeg adding two goals and four assists and Gianna Bowe chipping in three goals and two assists. Kara Klages (two goals and two assists) and Maggie Bill (three goals and one assist) each had four points, while Jamie Ortega, Marie McCool and Olivia Ferrucci each had two goals and one assist. Taylor McDaniels and Ally Mastroianni also scored for Carolina.
Carolina jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first six minutes of the game and led, 10-3, at halftime behind three goals from Hazar and two each from Bill and Bowe.
The rout was on in the second half as the Tar Heels blitzed the Golden Griffins by a 12-0 score.
Carolina outshot Canisius, 43-12, and had 17 ground balls to the Griffins' eight. The Tar Heels also forced 17 turnovers while committing just seven.
Elise Hennessey started for Carolina and picked up the win in goal, allowing three goals and making one save in 30 minutes. Taylor Moreno returned from injury to start the second half, making three saves in 26:18 scoreless minutes in goal. UNC field hockey player Alex Halpin, who joined the lacrosse team this month, played the final 3:42 without allowing a goal.
The Tar Heels will return to action in their regular season home finale next Saturday against Duke at 3 p.m. in Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill.
