Ortega Wins ACC Weekly Honor

GREENSBORO, NC. – Boston College junior attacker Sam Apuzzo and North Carolina freshman attacker Jamie Ortega share this week's Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week honors, while Virginia Tech redshirt senior goalie Meagh Graham is the ACC Defensive Player of the Week.
North Carolina's Ortega posted career highs of seven goals and eight points in the Tar Heels' 20-10 win over No. 22 Duke on Saturday in Chapel Hill. Her seven goals came on just nine shots, and she connected on both of her free position opportunities. During Carolina's 14-1 scoring run that turned a 5-4 deficit into an 18-6 lead, Ortega accounted for six of UNC's goals by herself.
Boston College's Apuzzo single-handedly keyed the Eagles' final regular-season victory to ensure a perfect 17-0 regular season and the No. 1 seed in the ACC Women's Lacrosse Championship. She led all players with eight points on five goals and three assists in Boston College's 13-12 win over Syracuse on Thursday. Included in her five goals were the Eagles' final three in the final 13 minutes. In an all-around effort, Apuzzo also registered a career-high six caused turnovers – including the game-changing SU turnover with 24 seconds remaining to give possession back to BC which set up her game-winner as time wound down. Additionally, Apuzzo collected a game-high seven draw controls. This is her fourth ACC Offensive Player of the Week honor of the season.
Virginia Tech's Graham posted 10 saves to help lead the Hokies to a 16-12 win over Virginia, which gave VT a program record 12th win of the season and the No. 3 seed in the upcoming ACC Championship. Along with her 10 saves, Graham also recorded five ground balls and one caused turnover.
The 2018 ACC Women's Lacrosse Championship will take place this weekend at Koskinen Stadium on the campus of Duke University. Quarterfinal action begins on Thursday at 11 a.m. with No. 1 seed Boston College taking on No. 8 seed Louisville. No. 4 Virginia versus No. 5 Notre Dame follows at 2 p.m. No. 2 North Carolina and No. 7 Syracuse will meet at 5 p.m., and No. 3 Virginia Tech and No. 6 Duke will play in the nightcap at 8 p.m. Friday's semifinals are set for 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., while Sunday's title game is at 1 p.m.
All seven games of the ACC Women's Lacrosse Championship will air on the ACC's Regional Sports Networks and will be available on ACC Network Extra and the Fox Sports Go app.
