April 25, 2018 | Baseball
Chapel Hill – No. 6 North Carolina defeated Western Carolina 8-2 on Wednesday night at Boshamer stadium to move to 28-13 on the year while winning 14 of their last 17 games. Brandon Riley led the way offensively going two for three at the plate with a home run and two runs scored.
The Tar Heels wasted little time getting on the scoreboard Wednesday night as Riley blasted a two-run home run to right field in the bottom of the first for the 2-0 lead. Carolina would tack on another run in the third before breaking the game open in the sixth with a four-run inning to take the 7-2 lead.
In the top of the sixth inning, Western Carolina responded to load the bases with no outs as they threatened to jump back in the game. With one out, the Catamounts singled down the third base line to score two runs, but Rodney Hutchison got two big strikeouts to prevent any further damage.
Western Carolina threatened again by loaded the bases in the top of the eighth, but Brett Daniels came on in relief of Hansen Butler and got out of the inning unscathed. Carolina would tack on one more run in the bottom of the eighth to take the 8-2 victory and move to 11-3 in the month of April
No. 6 North Carolina faces a big road test this weekend as it travels to Raleigh to face No. 2 NC State in a three-game ACC series. Both schools lead their respective divisions are tied for first overall in ACC play with a 15-6 record.
