Torrential Rain Ends Finale In Miami in Five Innings, Tar Heels Fall 7-5
April 8, 2018 | Baseball
Coral Gables, Fla. – North Carolina and Miami only played five full innings before torrential downpours ended the game, giving the Hurricanes a 7-5 win over the Tar Heels. North Carolina went in to the fifth leading 5-1, but a six-run inning in the bottom of the fifth from the Hurricanes gave them the 7-5 decisive lead before the weather ended the weekend series. North Carolina is now 21-11 on the season and 10-5 in the ACC.
After Miami took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, Carolina came back with three runs in the second for the 3-1 advantage. With two outs, Ashton McGee and Ike Freeman drew back-to-back walks for Clemente Inclan who laced a double to right field to score McGee from first. Two pitches later, Brandon Martorano followed suit with a double of his own to right field to clear the bases for the 3-1 lead.
The Tar Heels tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning thanks to a Brandon Riley single to right field to score Michael Busch and Kyle Datres for the 5-1 lead. Busch and Datres both reached on walks before Riley smacked a ball down the left field line in what looked like to be a triple, but he was tagged out on third after missing second base.
Miami came roaring back in the bottom of the 5th inning with six runs to take a 7-5 lead. With one out, Caden O'Brien walked back-to-back Miami batters and was replaced by Joey Lancellotti on the mound. After a single by Romy Gonzalez loaded the bases, Michael Burns hit a triple to centerfield that cleared the bases and brought the Hurricanes within one. Isaac Quinones then completed the comeback with a sacrifice fly that scored Burns to tie the game at five. With two runners on and two outs, Brett Daniels came on to replace Lancellotti and gave up a two-out double to Freddy Zamora that scored two more Hurricanes as they went on top, 7-5.
In the middle of the sixth inning, the heavens opened in Coral Gables as it turned in to a torrential downpour. In the top half of the sixth inning, the Tar Heels scored one run to make it 7-6 for Miami, but the game was called due to the rain in the middle of the inning so the score had to revert back to the last complete inning, giving the Hurricanes a 7-5 win. Had Carolina not given up six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, they would have won the game 5-1 and completed the sweep of the Hurricanes.
North Carolina will be back in action on Tuesday, April 10 at Boshamer Stadium as they host Appalachian State at 6 p.m. ET.
