- Title:
- Volunteer Assistant Coach
Jackie Briggs rejoined the UNC staff prior to the 2018 season for her second stint as a volunteer assistant coach, a role she also filled in 2012. A 2010 graduate of UNC, she spent nine years with the U.S. National Team before retiring from competition in 2018.
As a Tar Heel player, Briggs was part of two NCAA Championships (2007 and 2009) and one ACC Championship (2007). Then known as Jackie Kintzer, she earned first-team All-America honors in her junior and senior years, when she also was named to the All-ACC and All-NCAA Tournament teams. As a senior, she was the recipient of the team's Carmen and Michael Hooker Leadership Award and the Laree Beans Practice Player of the Year Award.
She also was a volunteer assistant coach at UNC in 2012, helping the Tar Heels to an Atlantic Coast Conference title.
Briggs earned 184 caps during nine years as part of the U.S. National Team, representing her country at the 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympic Games and at World Cups in 2014 and 2018. She was nominated for the FIH Hockey Stars Awards Female Goalkeeper of the Year Award in 2014, 2016 and 2017.
"As one of the world's top goalkeepers, Jackie brings valuable expertise to our staff," UNC coach Karen Shelton said when Briggs joined the staff. "Our goalkeepers benefit greatly from her insights and coaching. She had an outstanding career with the National Team, competing at the highest levels."
Her husband, Michael Briggs, was also a Tar Heel student-athlete, competing for the football team before graduating in 2008. He now serves as the eight-grade counselor at Mills Park Middle School in Cary, N.C., where he is also the head football coach. The Briggs family also includes two bulldogs, London and Blue.
