1940— George Stirnweiss: Football, Baseball, Basketball (New York, N.Y.)
Two-time All-Southern Conference football player and an All-America in 1939, who went on to play 10 seasons in Major League baseball, mostly with the New York Yankees. Two-time American League all-star (1945 and 1946) and won three World Series (1943, 1947 and 1949). Led the American League in batting in 1945 with a .309 average, becoming the fourth Yankee to lead the league in batting with Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio. Led the AL in stolen bases in 1944 and 1945.
Played quarterback/halfback and was a standout punter. Scored on an 86-yard touchdown run vs. The Citadel in 1939. Drafted by the NFL’s Chicago Cardinals, but chose to play professional baseball.
Scored 14 points in eight games on the UNC basketball team in the 1937-38 season.
Nicknamed “Snuffy.”
Coached Charlie “Choo Choo'' Justice during his freshman year in 1946 as the Tar Heels backs coach.
Was killed in a train wreck in New York at the age of 39.
