2000— Tripp Phillips: Men's Tennis (Charlotte, N.C.)
Phillips played in the 2000 NCAA quarterfinals, earned first-team All-America honors and was top runner-up in No. 1 flight singles in the ACC as a fifth-year senior. He was the first men’s tennis player to win the Patterson Medal since Vic Seixas in 1950.
He won the John Van Nostrand Awards for the South Atlantic Region for character, academics and discipline. Carolina’s team captain, Phillips was ranked 12th in the final ITA rankings in singles. He was 26-5 in singles and led the Tar Heels from No. 68 in the nation in the preseason to a final ranking of No. 21. He beat Daniel Andersson of Virginia Commonwealth, the top-ranked player in the country, during the regular season.
Phillips played professionally, reaching the No. 29 doubles ranking in the world in 2006. He paired with Australia’s Ashley Fisher to advance to the semifinals of the U.S. Open in 2006 and won an ATP event in Tokyo that same season.
He returned to UNC as an assistant coach in 2006. The 2024-25 season is his 20th on staff.
