Tar Heels Move To Tenth In Second Round Of Mercedes-Benz Championships

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. ---- North Carolina's women's golf team moved up one position to tenth place following the second round of the Mercedes-Benz Women's Champion in Knoxville Tennessee. As a team the Tar Heels fired a second round score of 311, a five-stroke improvement from the first day of competition. They currently have a total team score of 627 for the tournament.
Leading the tournament in team competition are the University of South Carolina and the University of Georgia. Both teams have carded a two-day team total of 600. After the first round of competition, the Bulldogs were in first place alone, but they now find themselves tied with South Carolina and four-strokes ahead of third place Wake Forest. Auburn and Purdue round out the top five in team competition.
Individually, the Tar Heels are led by Marcy Newton and Heather Angell who both have shot two-day totals of 155 and are currently tied with five others for 28th place. Newton fired a second round score of 75 and Angell followed up her first round with a 74 on the day. Sophomore Beth Lever carded a second round score of 80, which brings her two-day total to 158. Abby Spector and Britta Olson shot an 80 and 82 respectively.
Georgia's Shauna Estes leads the tournament after shooting a second round score of 71. She is currently 3-under par for the tournament. Wake Forest teammates, Maria Beautell and Nuria Clau are in second and third place respectively. Beautell repeated her first day score of 72 to bring her two-day total to 144. This is good enough for even par for the tournament and three strokes behind Estes. Clau is one-over for the tournament after shooting a 71 for the second round.
The final round of the tournament will be held tomorrow. The 54-hole event is being played at the Gettysvue Polo, Golf & Country Club, which features a par 72, 5,958-yard layout.
