UNC Volleyball Puts Away Georgia Tech In Four Games

Chapel Hill, N.C. - The North Carolina volleyball team bounced back, after its heart-breaking loss to Clemson, by defeating Georgia Tech 3-1 (4-15, 15-9, 15-12, 15-9) at Carmichael Auditorium Saturday.
Casey Simpson had 16 kills and eight blocks for the Tar Heels and sophomore Kathy Konczal hit .448 with 13 kills on 29 attempts and no errors. Lisa Fryer gave a strong defensive performance, producing 17 digs for Carolina and was followed by the duo of Simpson and Konczal with 13 each. Senior Tori Seibert equaled Simpson's eight blocks and added 12 kills, while freshman Laura Greene recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs.
Georgia Tech looked strong early as it jumped out to an 8-0 lead in game one. The Tar Heels, still appearing to be feeling the effects of their marathon match with Clemson, could not recover and the Yellow Jackets took the game 15-5.
Game two began in a similar fashion, with Tech taking a 6-0 lead at the start of game two. However, in this game, the Tar Heels found themselves and proceeded on a 12-1 run for a 12-7 lead. UNC finished the game 3-2 for the 15-9 win.
Game three again started with a Yellow Jacket run, this time 5-0, and they held their lead until the Heels tied the game at ten. The teams were then tied at 11 and 12 before Carolina took the final three points for the 15-12 win.
Game four was a solid win for UNC. Carolina opened with a 4-0 lead and extended it to 14-4. Georgia Tech fought off numerous match points during a 5-0 run, but one of Casey Simpson's eight blocks finished of the Yellow Jackets and the match.
Georgia Tech was led by the combination of Teryl Townsend and Maja Pachale who had 22 and 21 kills, respectively. Six Yellow Jackets finished in double-figures in digs, one of which being Pachale, who led the team with 16. The Tar Heels will next host the N.C. State Wolfpack on Thursday at Carmichael Auditorium at 7:00 p.m.
