Chapel Hill, N.C.-The University of North Carolina softball team wrapped up its fall competition Thursday by splitting a double-header with visiting Louisburg College. The Tar Heels lost the first game 4-1 but came back to win the second 6-0.
In the first game, UNC led 1-0 in the seventh inning before Louisburg rebounded for four runs. In the second game, pitchers Erin Joseph and Michael Parrott combined for a no-hitter and 11 strikeouts (six by Parrott, five by Joseph). Freshman Quinn Porter, who played right field, went 2-for-3 at the plate.
"The fall games have given us a good chance to see a lot of people play and get some ideas about our lineup for the spring," UNC coach Donna Papa said. "We have plenty of work to do before February, but we have seen some good things this fall.
"Michael, one of our freshmen, had a good fall and has established herself on the mound. She's versatile and also gives us another bat and another defensive player. She's an all-around player.
"Jen Klesaris and Crystal Henderson, both seniors, have been offensive and defensive catalysts for us. Jen's bat is really important in our lineup and she also helps us with her experience and maturity. Crystal, as our leadoff hitter, has gotten some big hits. We're just trying to find the people who will hit her in."
The Tar Heels, 40-22 last season, open the 2000 season on Feb. 10, when Elon visits for a 3 p.m. double-header.
