UNC Field Hockey Falls Short Of Final Four Spot

IOWA CITY, Iowa-Fourth-ranked Iowa beat the eighth-ranked North Carolina field hockey team 2-0 Sunday afternoon to earn a spot in field hockey's NCAA Championships. The Hawkeyes will meet top-ranked Maryland on Friday in Boston, Mass., in one national semifinal. In the other, Michigan will face Connecticut. The NCAA title game is set for Nov. 21.
Iowa's Gina Carr scored the game-winner barely a minute into the NCAA second-round matchup, at the 33:47 mark. The Hawkeyes added another goal, this one by Lesley Irvine, with 9:16 remaining in the game.
The Tar Heels finish the 1999 season with a record of 16-6 and will return all 11 starters for next season. Backup goalkeeper Nicole Frey is the team's only senior.
