Durham, N.C. - UNC fell just short against the Duke Blue Devils 3-2 (15-6, 12-15, 12-15, 15-8, 15-17) Sunday at Cameron Indoor Stadium to make their record 21-5 overall, 11-2 in the ACC. The loss marked the first time this season UNC lost to unranked team.
Tori Seibert led Carolina with 24 kills and a hitting percentage of .333 in the match. Three Tar Heels recorded 20 digs including junior Liz Feldman and freshmen Malaika Underwood and Eve Rackham. Lisa Fryer followed just behind with 19. Kathy Konczal recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 14 digs for UNC, which fought throughout the match with great determination.
Game one was a solid win for the Tar Heels as they opened on an 8-1 run and extended their lead to nine by the game's end at 15-6.
Duke answered in game two, building a 7-2 lead, before Carolina pulled to within one at 7-6. The Blue Devils were leading 10-9 and tallied four consecutive points for a 14-9 lead and an eventual 15-12 win.
In game three, Duke again began with a 7-2 lead and extended it to 10-2, when UNC came fighting back on a 10-3 run to be within one at 13-12. However, Duke was able to put away two final points for the 15-12 win.
The determined Tar Heels pulled away from an 8-8 tie in game four by winning the last seven points for a 15-8 win and forced a game five.
Trailing 12-8 in the game, Carolina, on the strength of two kills each by Casey Simpson and Kathy Konczal, took a 13-12 lead. Duke tied the game at 13 and Tori Seibert put away a shot to regain the lead at 14-13. On the next play, a ball hit by Malaika Underwood fell out of bounds, the officials conferred to determine if it had been touched by Duke and ruled that it had not. Duke took that point to tie the match a 14 and won three of the next four points to take the game 17-15 and the match.
Senior Dominique Philipp led the Devils with 22 kills and was second on the team with 18 digs as Duke evened their overall record at 12-12 and increased their conference record to 6-8.
UNC will next return home to Carmichael Auditorium to face Maryland at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
