CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Two student-athletes from the University of North Carolina were named Tuesday to the 1998-99 GTE Academic All-America University Division Men's Fall-Winter At-Large Team selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. The GTE Academic All-America teams are the most prestigious academic honors a student-athlete can earn on an annual basis.
Swimmer Ted Brisson of Goldsboro, N.C. was named to the GTE Second-Team Academic All-America for the second successive year. He was joined from Carolina on the GTE Third-Team Academic All-America Team by soccer player Michael Bucy of Raleigh, N.C.
This is the second straight year that the University has had two selections to the GTE Men's At-Large Team. Brisson was a second-team choice last year and was joined on the 1998 team by fellow swimmer Eric Fehr, a third-team selection a year ago.
Brisson is a senior swimmer from Goldsboro, N.C., who currently maintains a 3.81 grade point average while double majoring in economics and chemistry. He will be attending medical school at UNC this coming fall.
Bucy is a sophomore from Raleigh, N.C. attending Carolina on a prestigious Morehead Scholarship. He currently has a 4.0 grade point average in his sophomore year. Next fall, he will begin his work in UNC's Kenan-Flagler Business School.
