CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina scored on four of its first eight shots in the second half to blow open a 1-1 halftime tie and defeat Appalachian State, 5-1, Tuesday night in collegiate men's soccer action at Fetzer Field. Three of Carolina's second-half goals came in a span of 4:41 as what was a close game quickly became a blowout.
The win, UNCs third in a row, improved the Tar Heels to 8-4 on the 1998 season. Appalachian State fell to 10-4.
Caleb Norkus started the Carolina scoring with an unassisted goal at the 20:47 mark. With Mountaineer starting goalkeeper Will Floyd out of position, Norkus fired a shot that ASU defender Wes Miller saved, but Norkus got his own rebound and scored for a 1-0 lead. Appalachian, which played very well in the first half, tied the score when Jeremy Marsh took a Naoshi Yamauchi assist and drilled it into the top left of the net from 21 yards out at the 27:58 mark.
Norkus scored again at the 48:58 mark on another rebound of his own shot to give Carolina a 2-1 lead. At 67:08, David Popp scored after a cross by Joe DiSalvo and another assist from Chris Leitch for a 3-1 margin. Just over three minutes later, Brandon Helms scored his first career goal on a header off assists from Popp and Daniel Jackson for a 4-1 lead. And a minute later, DiSalvo scored on a long pass ahead from Jackson.
