Durham, N.C. -- Jamie Hammond scattered seven hits in 8.0 innings of work as Maryland eliminated North Carolina, 6-3, from the 1999 Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament Thursday at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. With the win, Maryland improves to 23-32-1 on the season. Carolina, which has lost a season-high four games in a row, falls to 40-16.
The win was Maryland's first ever in 11 tries versus Carolina in the ACC Tournament. UNC's loss marked just the second time in 26 ACC Tournament appearances that the Tar Heels had lost their first two games and been eliminated.
Hammond (5-4) allowed one run and struck out four in the first 8.0 innings before he allowed two straight hits and was pulled in the top of the ninth. Terrapin reliever Mike Ginsberg came in to finish the game, allowing two inherited runners to score. Kyle Snyder (7-5) lost his third straight start despite allowing just three hits and three runs in 6.2 innings.
Snyder did not allow his first hit of the game until the fourth inning, when Craig Munroe hit a two-run home run down the rightfield line for a 2-0 Terp lead. Chuck Easter went 2-for-4 for Maryland. Tyrell Godwin and Ryan Earey both went 2-for-4 for Carolina.
Carolina batted 12-for-79 (.152) and committed 10 errors in its two ACC Tournament games.
The Tar Heels now await word on an NCAA Tournament bid. Pairings for the 1999 NCAA Tournament will be announced on Monday, May 24 at 3:00 p.m. on ESPN.
