Tar Heels Receive Bid to NCAA East Regional

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- North Carolina's women's golf team was one of 19 teams to receive a bid to participate in the NCAA East Regional. The 54-hole event will be played May 6-8 at The University Club in Blythewood, S.C.
In addition to the 19 teams, seven individuals (not on those teams) received a bid to play in the regional. The top eight teams and two individuals not from those squads advance on to the NCAA Championships which will be played May 19-22 in Tulsa, Okla.
Three of the four Atlantic Coast Conference teams received a bid. In addition to Carolina, top-ranked Duke and Wake Forest will be among the participants.
The Tar Heels, ranked 25th in the polls, captured the championship of the Lady Seminole Invitational, the first tournament of the fall campaign. Carolina has posted six top-five finishes this year.
The Tar Heels have been led by junior Marcy Newton, from High Point, N.C. Newton was the individual medalist at the Fripp Island Women's Intercollegiate, the first tournament of the spring campaign. Newton has been the runner-up in two tournaments this year and has posted six top 10 and eight top 20 finishes. Heather Angell, a freshman from Winston-Salem, N.C., broke into the starting lineup in her first year as a Tar Heel. Angell has carded three top 10 and six top 20 finishes. Shelley McKevitt, a sophomore from Reading, England, has posted two top 10 and four top 20 finishes this year. Another sophomore, Cuyler Buckles, from Columbus, Ohio, has carded six finishes in the top 30 while Beth Lever, a freshman from Bloomfield Hills, Mich., became a starter this spring and tied for 20th place at the ACC Tournament.
Carolina has received a bid to the NCAA East Regional each year since the regional format was instituted in women's golf in 1993. This marks Carolina's seventh appearance in the NCAA East Regional.
