Chapel Hill, N.C. - Chris Carrieri scored twice as North Carolina defeated #19 Wake Forest, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Fetzer Field. The win came in Carolina's final Atlantic Coast Conference game of the season and pulled UNC into a tie with Maryland for fourth place in the ACC with a 3-3 league record.
Wake Forest, which was just behind Carolina in the ACC standings entering the game, fell to 1-3-1 in the conference with a home game with Clemson remaining next Sunday.
With the victory, Carolina's unbeaten streak improves to eight games since its Oct. 4 loss at Duke. The Tar Heels, who have won six games and tied two during the streak, are now 11-4-2 on the season, 3-3-0 in the ACC. Wake Forest falls to 11-5-1, 1-3-1.
Wake Forest grabbed a 1-0 lead at the 39:27 mark when Ben Stafford took a Jaron Barbee pass and put the ball into the left corner of the net from 15 yards out.
The Tar Heels battled back and regained the momentum with a flurry of shots that resulted in Chris Carrieri tying the score at the 40:55 mark. Daniel Jackson lofted a long pass from the UNC half of the field down the left sideline that Carrieri ran down and put in the net over Demon Deacon keeper Sean Conner's head.
Carrieri added the game-winning goal at the 79:15 mark when David Popp tapped Joe DiSalvo's corner kick to Carrieri, who scored. The Tar Heel defense limited Wake to eight shots on goal for the game, most of which came in the frenzied final minutes of the second half as the Deacons tried to tie the score.
The Tar Heels return to action Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at South Carolina in UNC's final game of the season.
