Men's Soccer Falls to No. 9 South Carolina

Columbia, S.C. - Nathan Watkins scored 4:13 into the first overtime period as the No. 9-ranked South Carolina men's soccer team defeated 16th-ranked North Carolina, 2-1, in overtime Sunday afternoon in the Tar Heels' regular season finale.
UNC, which saw its eight-match unbeaten streak come to an end, concludes its regular season with a record of 11-5-2. South Carolina improves to 14-4-0.
The Tar Heels took a 1-0 lead at the 23:40 mark when Caleb Norkus scored from 10 yards out off an assist from Chris Carrieri. The Gamecocks came back to tie the score at 1-1 just before halftime when Kim Erikson scored on a free kick to the right corner of the net. The two teams played scoreless soccer throughout the second half before Watkins scored at 94:13 off an assist from Scott Campagna.
The Tar Heels return to action Thursday in the ACC Tournament in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Tar Heels will be the fourth seed and will face fifth-seeded Maryland at 8:00 p.m. Thursday. Carolina and Maryland both finished with 3-3 records in the ACC but the Tar Heels receive the higher seed because they defeated Maryland, 2-1, in overtime Oct. 10.
