CHAPEL HILL, N.C. North Carolina freshman Chris Carrieri scored his 10th goal of the 1998 season as the Tar Heels defeated N.C. State, 1-0, in Atlantic Coast Conference mens soccer action Saturday night at Fetzer Field. Carolina extended its unbeaten streak to six matches, dating to the Oct. 7 win over High Point. The Heels have four wins and two ties in their last six contests.
The UNC defense played very well Saturday night, limiting the Wolfpack to two first-half shots and not allowing a serious scoring threat until a brief flurry late in the second half. Carolina, which tied Radford, 0-0, Tuesday night, posted its second straight shutout. The win improved Carolina to 9-4-2 on the season, 2-3-0 in the ACC. N.C. State fell to 4-11, 0-6.
Carrieri scored on a header off a Joe DiSalvo corner kick at the 21:45 mark for all the scoring the Heels would need on the night. The Tar Heels controlled possession of the ball for most of the game and outshot the Pack, 19-10.
The Tar Heels return to action Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. against Davidson at Fetzer Field.
