ATLANTA, Ga. - Despite struggling in doubles play on Saturday afternoon, North Carolina's 27th-ranked women's tennis team still prevailed 5-4 over 28th-rated Georgia Tech to claim its first Atlantic Coast Conference victory of the season at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.
Both teams now stand 10-4 overall and 1-1 in ACC play. The Tar Heels will continue their road trip by playing at #60 Clemson Sunday at 1 p.m.
Carolina won five of the six singles matches on Saturday to clinch its win over the Yellow Jackets in singles. Key to the success of the Tar Heels was the play of junior Jessica Zaganczyk at #1 and junior Jeni Burnette. Zaganczyk defeated Sabrina Pardo of Tech in a third-set tiebreaker 7-3 to claim the victory for UNC at the #1 spot. Burnette rallied from one set down to score a 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 win over Autumn Richards of the Jackets at #6 singles.
Also winning in singles for UNC with impressive straight sets triumphs were freshman Caroline Hill at #2, junior Cena Hackler at #4 and sophomore Courtney Zalinski at #5.
Georgia Tech ended up sweeping the Tar Heels in doubles but it was too little, too late for the Jackets as Carolina still claimed the victory.
