Women's Tennis Defeats Clemson, 5-4

CLEMSON, S.C. - The North Carolina women's tennis team, ranked 27th nationally, defeated Clemson 5-4 Sunday afternoon at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center on Clemson's campus. Clemson freshman Carmina Giraldo defeated Jessica Zaganczyk at number one singles 6-4, 6-7, 6-0, and Tiger junior Catherine Galvin was victorious over Sarah Hawkins at number three singles 6-4, 6-1.
North Carolina won four singles matches, including Caroline Hill's 6-1, 6-0 win over Kate-Maree Mair at flight two. Junior Cena Hackler defeated Clemson senior Cecilia Hincapie 6-2, 0-6, 6-4 at number four, and sophomore Courtney Zalinski defeated sophomore Christina Oldock 6-1, 6-1 at five singles. Junior Jeni Burnette defeated sophomore Cinny Clausen 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 at six singles.
Clemson won two out of the three doubles matches. Giraldo and Mair defeated Zaganczyk and Hackler 8-6 at flight one, while Clausen and Hincapie took an 8-6 win over Hawkins and Hill at flight two. The Tar Heel team of Burnette and Zalinski won flight three doubles over Oldock and Galvin 8-5.
Clemson (4-10, 0-3 ACC) will travel to Maryland Saturday for a noon match. North Carolina's record goes to 11-4, 2-1 ACC with the win.
