RALEIGH, N.C. - Clay Hooper's two-out single to right field scored pinch-runner Jay Madeira with the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning Friday night to lift North Carolina to a wild Atlantic Coast Conference baseball victory over NC State, 13-12 at Doak Field.
The win raised North Carolina to 3-4 in the ACC and 25-5 overall. The slumping Wolfpack dropped to 3-7 in the league and 23-10 overall.
Reliever Derrick DePriest (3-2) worked the final 3 1/3 innings for the Tar Heels, allowing no runs on two hits to pick up the win. Dustin aker (3-3), the last of seven NC State pitchers, allowed one run on two hits in an inning of work to take the loss.
North Carolina jumped to early leads of 7-2 and 9-6, but NC State battled back each time, tying the score at 9-9 with three runs in the fourth inning and taking the the lead at 12-11 with three more in the bottom of the sixth. UNC came back to score unanswered runs in the top of the eighth and ninth innings to pick up the win.
Jarrett Shearin, who went 4-for-5 with a double, a home run and two RBIs, led off the top of the second with a solo homer, and Wes Reynolds singled in a run later in the inning to give the Tar Heels a 2-0 lead. Josh Ballard's two-out single in the bottom of the second scored Aaron Maher and Josh Schmitt to tie the game at 2-2.
The Tar Heels appeared to break the game open in the top of the third inning, scoring five runs on three hits and a pair of NC State errors. The first two runs scored on errors by third baseman Jason Smith, and Reynolds then ripped a bases-loaded double to the gap in left-center field, clearing the bases and giving UNC ace Mike Bynum a 7-2 lead.
It was not a pitcher's night, however. NC State came back with four in the bottom of the third on an RBI double by Todd DeMakes, a run-scoring groundout by Maher, an RBI-single by Josh Schmitt and a double steal, cutting the lead to 7-6. That was the end of the night for Bynum, who turned in his shortest outing of the season.
UNC answered right back with two in the top of the fourth on a two-run single by Tyrell Godwin, but NC State tied the score at 9-9 with three in the bottom of the fourth on RBI doubles by Brian Ward, Matt Postell and Todd DeMakes.
A wild pitch and an error gave UNC two runs in the top of the sixth, but Postell homered to lead off the bottom of the inning, and Adrean Acevedo laced a two-run single to right to give NC State the lead at 12-11.
Shearin tied the score with a clutch single to right field in the top of the eighth, and Hooper came through with the game-winner in the ninth.
