For a team that was supposed to rely so heavily on its highly-touted pitching this season, North Carolina puts a lot of runs on the board. It seems that no one has reminded the Heels offensive line up that their pitching staff only needs a few batters to cross the plate in order to win. Carolina's offense showed early and often on Saturday at Bieden Field in Fresno, California that it was the dominant of the two teams on the field, as the Heels picked up the win 11-3 to move to 14-0 this season. Tar Heel batters struck for 11 runs on 14 hits and did it all without hitting a home run. Midshipmen starting pitcher Scott Kozink had to deal with a three run barrage in the first inning, and the Heels never let up, adding three runs in the fourth, another in the fifth, and four more in the seventh inning to close out the scoring.
Tar Heel starter Chris Elmore (1-0) turned in seven strong innings for Carolina en route to picking up his first win of the season. Elmore struck out six while walking only one and giving up just three runs. Relievers Corey Richardson and Ryan Earey pitched one hitless inning apiece to ensure the win. Kozink fell to 0-3 for Navy who lost their second consecutive game in the Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic.
Chris LaMarsh, who leads Carolina in batting average, continued to stroke the ball going 3-4 in the game with one run scored. Dan Moylan and Clay Hooper led all scorers with two runs scored each, and several Tar Heels (LaMarsh, Hooper, Tyrell Godwin, Ryan Mathews, and Rob Miano) had multiple hits on the day.
Carolina returns to action at 1:00 p.m. Pacific time on Wednesday when lefty Mike Bynum (3-0) will take the mound for the fourth ranked Heels against Portland. Should the Tar Heels win Wednesday, they will gain the number one seed in the Blue Division and play the four seed out of the Red Division on Thursday.
