Chapel Hill, N.C. -- Ryan Earey went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI and Clay Hooper went 2-for-5 with a home run and a triple as the University of North Carolina defeated Campbell, 7-6, Wednesday evening at Boshamer Stadium. The win was Carolina's 36th in a row at home against non-conference competition and 17th in a row this season. The victory improved the Tar Heels to 34-9 on the season while the loss dropped Campbell to 21-23.
Michael Horney (6-0) pitched 3.0 scoreless innings of relief, allowing one hit and striking out three, to earn the victory for Carolina. Derrick DePriest allowed one hit in the final 2.0 innings and did not allow a run while fanning four to earn his fifth save of the year. Byron Batson (4-7) allowed the go-ahead run in the fifth and took the loss for Campbell.
Campbell jumped on UNC starter Chris Elmore in the top of the first, scoring four runs on four hits. After Bradley Coates and Ben Barker singled with one out, Jeff Huff singled to drive in Coates. Barker and Huff then pulled a double steal from first and third base to make the lead 2-0. Jeff Davis followed with a long, two-run home run to left that made it 4-0.
Carolina quickly tied the score in the bottom of the first. Dan Moylan led off the inning with a walk and scored on Hooper's triple down the rightfield line. Chris LaMarsh then hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Hooper. After Jarrett Shearin doubled and Tyrell Godwin walked, the pair pulled off a double steal for runners at second and third base with one out. Shearin scored on Earey's groundout and Matt McCay drove in Godwin with a single to left that chased Campbell starting pitcher Corey Byrd from the game.
Solo home runs by Hooper in the second and Earey in the third gave UNC a 6-4 lead. The Fighting Camels tied it at 6-6 in the fourth when Dan Krause hit an RBI single and Jason Wilkerson drove in a run with a sacrifice bunt.
Carolina retook the lead and scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth. Godwin led off the inning by legging out a triple to left-centerfield and scored on a single by Earey.
The Tar Heels return to action Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. in the first game of a three-game weekend series with Duke at Boshamer Stadium.
