Upset-Minded Women's Lacrosse Loses to Top-Seeded Maryland OT

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Fourth-seeded North Carolina fell short in their attempt to upset top-seeded Maryland in the semi-finals of the 1999 ACC Women's Lacrosse Tournament at the newly opened Francis E. Henry Stadium Lacrosse Facility. Despite a miraculous comeback, the Tar Heels lost 19-17 in overtime.
Before an energized crowd of 750, North Carolina could not complete the upset bid as the Terrapins outscored North Carolina 4-2 in the overtime period. With the victory, Maryland improves to 14-0 while North Carolina falls to 7-6 on the season.
In a game supposed to feature two of the top defensive teams in the country, the Terrapins and Tar Heels combined for seven goals in the first eight minutes of the contest. The 19 goals given up by the Tar Heels marks the most goals ever scored by an opponent in their young history. Equally, the 17 goals North Carolina scored on Maryland marked the most goals the Terrapins have given up all season.
The University of Maryland was led by sophomore attackwoman Jen Adams, who scored seven goals, marking her career high. Sophomore Allison Comito chipped in three goals and three assists to highlight the Terrapin offensive attack. North Carolina was led by six goals from senior attackwoman Erin McGinnis. Her gutsy performance matched the mark for individual goals scored by a Tar Heel, a feat she has matched twice before during her productive career at Carolina.
North Carolina nearly completed one of the greatest comebacks in Tar Heel women's lacrosse history despite losing one of the team's leaders, goalkeeper Debbie Castine, who went down in the game's fourth minute with an injured knee. She would not return for the rest of the game, leaving the Tar Heels with red-shirt freshman goalkeeper Melissa Coyne to lead the team. She did just that by recording nine saves in her relief performance.
With 15 minutes remaining in the semi-final match, Maryland appeared to have locked up a victory and final round berth in the tournament, leading the Tar Heels 15-8. Then, in the 46th minute, North Carolina began a scoring tear, which would eventually lead to the Tar Heels scoring seven unanswered goals in the final fifteen minutes of regulation. In the overtime period, the Tar Heels did not have the answer to Maryland's Jen Adams, who capped her seven-goal performance with Maryland's first and fourth goals of the six-minute period.
Maryland advances to the final round of the ACC Tournament to face the winner of the other semi-final match featuring second-seeded Duke and third-seeded Virginia. The final match to start at 1 p.m. will take place in Chapel Hill at the Francis E. Henry Stadium.
