Chapel Hill, N.C.--The University of North Carolina scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and scored nine unanswered runs to take a 9-3 victory over Wake Forest Sunday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium. The win was Carolina's second in the three-game weekend series with the Demon Deacons and improved the Tar Heels to 20-2, 2-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Wake Forest fell to 15-6, 3-2 in the ACC.
Sophomore Ryan Snare (2-0) struck out seven and walked just one in 8.0 innings to pick up the victory for Carolina. The 8.0 innings pitched tied Snare's longest career outing. He also pitched 8.0 innings on Feb. 27, 1998 versus George Mason. Snare walked a batter in the first inning and did not issue a walk in his final 7.0 innings. Eric Schmitt (2-1) allowed seven hits and five earned runs in 5.0 innings to take the loss.
Ryan Earey led a 14-hit UNC attack by going 2-for-4 with a single, double and four RBI. Jarrett Shearin went 3-for-4 with a double, two singles and two runs scored. Freshman Ryan Blake hit a three-run home run in the five-run sixth inning.
Wake jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, scoring a pair of runs on two singles, a Tar Heel error and walk and wild pitch issued by Snare. The Demon Deacons added a run in the top of the fourth when Danny Borrell was hit by a Snare pitch, advanced to third on a single by Corey Slavik and scored on an RBI single by Chase Voshell.
Carolina scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 3-2 when Earey hit a two-run double to score Chris LaMarsh and Shearin. In the five-run sixth, Earey hit a two-run single to score LaMarsh and Shearin again. Blake followed three batters later with a three-run blast to right-centerfield. Carolina added single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to round out the scoring.
The game was halted with one out in the top of the ninth inning due to rain and lightning.
Carolina returns to action Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. versus Towson in Boshamer Stadium.
