Men's Tennis Players Advance in Indoor Tournament

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The ACC advances five of eight players into Sunday's quarterfinal round of the Top of the Hill/Region II Men's Tennis Indoor Championships at UNC's Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
Tar Heel senior Michael Grass lost to Duke's Ramsey Smith 6-1, 6-0 in second round singles action. Smith advanced to the quarterfinal round with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 win over UNC-Greensboro's Alex Lehnhoff. Smith faces top seed Gulliame Legat of the University of South Carolina at 9 a.m. Sunday. Legat has lost only four games in the tournament. Smith's teammate, Doug Root, defeated Olaaf Akesson of the University of South Carolina 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. Root faces Virginia's Brian Vahaley at 9 a.m. tomorrow. Vahaley defeated Joao Leite in a three set second round 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.
North Carolina junior Assaf Drrori reached the fourth round (final 16) of the championships before he was eliminated by Virginia Commonwealth's Daniel Anderson, 6-22, 6-2. Anderson takes on the University of Virginia's Tommy Clouston at 9 a.m. tomorrow. Clouston earned his quarterfinal berth by beating Old Dominion's Alex Canaco 6-1, 6-1. Anderson won last year's singles title and is currently ranked fourth in the nation.
Florida State's Ty Braswell also clinched a quarterfinal bid for the ACC, after beating South Carolina's Jerome Jourdan 7-5, 7-6 (4) match.
Tournament play continues tomorrow through Monday. Monday's winner automatically qualifies for the Rolex National Indoor Championships. Match times for specific players and an updated daily schedule of play may be obtained by phoning the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center at (919) 962-6363.
