The University of North Carolina men's tennis team will play its second consecutive weekend on the road when it visits Virginia Tech and Virginia this weekend. The Tar Heels will meet the Hokies on Friday at 2:30 p.m. in Blacksburg, Va., then visit the No. 2-ranked Cavaliers on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Charlottesville.
Carolina, ranked No. 65, is 9-5 overall this season, including 2-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. UNC opened conference play at home two weeks ago with a win over No. 12 Stanford and a loss to No. 48 California, then split two matches last week, topping Boston College in a neutral-site match and falling at No. 47 SMU.
Three Tar Heels are ranked in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association singles rankings: No. 42 Roan Jones, No. 82 Ian Mayew and No. 96 Niels Ratiu. In doubles, Jones and Logan Zapp are ranked No. 31 while Ratiu and Chris Xu are ranked No. 34.
Jones leads Carolina in singles wins this season, boasting an overall record of 18-3, including 10-1 in dual matches and 4-0 in ACC competition. Mayew is right behind Jones with 17 overall singles wins, including 6-3 in dual matches and 3-1 in ACC duals.
Following the weekend in Virginia, the Tar Heels will return home for a four-match homestand. Carolina will host Clemson (March 20), Georgia Tech (March 22), Wake Forest (March 27) and NC State (March 29) to wrap up its regular season slate at the Chewning Tennis Center in Chapel Hill.
