Friday's action: Georgia Tech's (31-15, 10-9) Cory Vance (7-3) threw a three-hitter for his second career complete game as the Yellow Jackets took a 3-2 win over Florida St. (38-10, 14-2) at Russ Chandler Stadium in Atlanta, Ga. The loss was the sixth straight for FSU, setting a school record. The game was a classic pitcher's duel, as both Vance and FSU starter Jon McDonald (7-2) went the distance. The lefthanded Vance struck out four and walked three, while McDonald gave up 11 hits while striking out eight Tech batters. Tech trailed 2-1 before scoring a pair of runs with two outs in the sixth. Eric McQueen smacked his eighth homer of the season to tie the score, then Richard Lewis singled and scored on Victor Menocal's RBI double... N.C. State (32-18, 9-10) scored ten runs in the fith and sixth innings to take an 11-5 win over Duke (22-26, 2-15) at Jack Coombs Field in Durham, N.C. The Pack trailed 2-0 in the fifth before their bats came alive. A six-run fifth inning was keyed by a Craig Lee home run and RBI doubles by Matt Postell and Andy Baxter. The Pack scored four more in the sixth, aided by Brian Wright's lead-off homer and Brian Ward's two-run double. Ward finished the game with four hits and three RBI. Ryan Combs (3-0) got the win by three runs on eight hits in six innings of work. Duke's Tyler Lang (3-3) absorbed the loss by giving up six runs in 4.2 innings.
Thursday's action: Rain cancelled the UNC-ECU game as well as the N.C. State at Duke game. The UNC-ECU game will not be rescheduled, while State and Duke will play a 3:00 game on Friday and a double-header beginning at 12:00 noon on Saturday (one nine-inning and one seven-inning game).
Wednesday's action: UMBC's (17-20) Matt Hewitt hit a first-inning grand slam homer to propel the Retrievers to a 12-3 win over the Maryland Terrapins (18-22, 6-11) at Shipley Field in College Park, Md. Ryan Lewis (3-1) got the win by giving up two runs in 4.1 innings on the mound. Ray Wagner (2-2) suffered the loss for the Terps. UMBC led 11-0 after five innings before the Terps finally got on the board. The win was UMBC's first over Maryland since 1995... Rain forced the cancellation of the Virginia vs. Virginia Tech and Wake Forest vs. UNC-Charlotte games.
Tuesday's action: No. 13 Wake Forest (32-13, 13-7) rolled to an 8-2 win over Davidson. Scott Siemon (9-1) got the complete-game victory, giving up two unearned runs on five hits. Carlos Brackley was 3-4 with two RBI to lead the Deacons' offense... Towson's (19-14) Tim Pritchard hit a sixth-inning home run for what proved to be the winning run as the Tigers edged Maryland (18-21, 6-11) at Shipley Field in College Park, Md. rian Gable (3-0) got the win by pitching the third, fourth and fifth innnings. Todd Ainsworth (0-4) suffered the loss despite giving up just two earned runs in 5.2 innnings. Pritchard was 2-4 with one RBI and two runs scored... Georgia Tech's (30-15, 9-9) Chuck Crowder (9-3) gave up just two hits in seven innings to lead the Yellow Jackets to an 8-1 win over Georgia (24-21) at Russ Chandler Stadium in Atlanta, Ga. Crowder's win was the 32nd of his career, tying him for seventh place in the ACC for career wins. Kyle Goodson (5-3) absorbed the loss by giving up five runs in five innings. Jason Basil and Bryan Prince homered for Tech... Virginia's (18-30, 7-13) Tim LaVigne drove in four runs as the Cavaliers topped Liberty (21-20) 11-6 at Charlottesville, Va. Jon Benick added three hits, and Jon Metzger (2-0) got the win by giving up three runs in five innings. Jason Suitt (2-4) was tagged with the loss after giving up six runs in 3.1 innings.
