It may have been the biggest talk Coach Mike Fox has ever given to one of his teams, and whatever he said on the bus Friday night before dinner worked. The Tar Heels came out on Saturday determined to turn around their ACC fortunes, and they may have done just that.Just after they defeated Maryland 4-2 on the strength of Ryan Snare's masterful complete game to even the series at one game each, the Heels pounded the Terps in an impressive offensive display. Carolina finally figured out what to do with the metal sticks they had been carrying around all weekend as they battered Terp pitchers for 17 runs on 20 hits and two Terrapin errors. The 17 runs scored by Carolina are the most given up by Maryland all year.
The win puts the Heels back in contention for the ACC race at the halfway point. Several Tar Heels were stellar offensively, but the one of biggest note was Matt McCay. McCay was 4-5 with a three run home run in the game, his first start since being pulled in the second inning for dropping a fly ball on Friday. Carolina starter Chris Elmore got a no decision after only pitching one inning and leaving the game tied at two. Michael Horney picked up the win for Carolina and moves to 5-0 on the year.
