Heels Shut Down Blue Devils, 8-0

Chapel Hill, N.C. -- Ryan Earey went 2-for-3 with a home run, a triple and four RBI and Mike Bynum pitched 8.0 shutout innings as North Carolina defeated Duke, 8-0, to capture its eighth consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference win Sunday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium. Earey batted 6-for-10 with seven RBI in the Duke series. Tar Heel pitchers allowed just three earned runs in 27.0 innings against the Blue Devils.
The win completes the Tar Heels' second consecutive three-game ACC sweep. Last weekend, UNC swept a three-game series from Virginia. Carolina's 1999 record now stands at 37-9, 11-7 in the ACC, good for third place in the conference behind Florida State and Wake Forest. UNC has won 11 of its last 12 games. Duke falls to 22-25, 2-14 ACC.
ynum (W, 6-1) struck out eight and walked two, allowing six hits. Ryan Earey pitched a scoreless ninth inning for UNC. Chris Capuano took the loss for Duke, allowing seven hits and eight runs while striking out nine.
Carolina scored three runs in the top of the first when Earey hit a three-run home run over the scoreboard in leftfield, driving in Dan Moylan and Jarrett Shearin. The Tar Heels added two more runs for a 5-0 lead in the second inning, piecing together three singles and a walk. Ryan Mathews drove in a run with an infield single and Chris LaMarsh scored on a wild pitch in the inning.
Hooper hit a homer of his own over the scoreboard in the fourth inning, a two-run shot that scored Mathews and gave Carolina a 7-0 lead. Earey's triple in the seventh scored Shearin from first base for an 8-0 lead.
Carolina returns to action Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. at East Carolina.
