Evtimov Signs with Greek Pro Team
July 14, 1999 | Men's Basketball
Evtimov, a native of Sofia, Bulgaria, played in 38 games for the Tar Heels in 1996-97 and 1998-99. He came to UNC after three years with Long Island Lutheran Prep in New York. Evtimov totaled 105 points and 173 rebounds in his two-year career. He had career highs of 13 points and 10 rebounds in the 1999 NCAA Tournament first round game against Weber State. He also had 10 points against Duke in the ACC Tournament and against Florida State in the regular season.
"Vasco and I have talked for several months about the possibility of his playing professionally in Europe," says head coach Bill Guthridge. "He called me today to tell me he had signed with a professional team in Athens.
"Vasco attended the first session of summer school here and then returned home to France where he further discussed the situation with his family. They have decided that this is too good an opportunity to pass up.
"We will certainly miss him. He gave a lot to our program, especially with his hustle and determination. We wish him the best and support his decision 100 percent. Vasco has told me he does plan to return to Chapel Hill in the future to finish his degree in summer school."||
