CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-In the first University of North Carolina intercollegiate athletic contest of the 1999-2000 school year, the Tar Heel field hockey team topped Michigan 4-1 on Saturday at Francis E. Henry Stadium. Besides being the season-opener for Carolina, it was the field hockey team's first game at its new stadium.
"This was a good start, but we have a long way to go," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "We want to work on our fundamentals, continue to mature and continue to improve."
The Tar Heels scored their first three goals off penalty corners. The first came 10 minutes into the game, on a shot by sophomore Abbey Woolley, assisted by junior Jana Toepel. After halftime, Toepel added to the lead, scoring off Woolley's assist with 24:08 remaining. Sophomore Carrie Lingo scored, with an assist by Toepel, to put the Tar Heels up 3-0 before Michigan got on the board with a penalty corner goal by junior Courtney Reid. Carolina sophomore Abby Martin scored the only field goal of the game, with 1:31 remaining, to set the final score.
"I thought our corner execution was outstanding," Shelton said. "On six corners, we scored three goals. Scoring on 50 percent is excellent and made the difference in the game."
Carolina, ranked No. 3 in one preseason poll, will look for its second win Sunday at Francis E. Henry Stadium when Duke, also 1-0, visits for a 2:30 p.m. ACC matchup.
