CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina men's tennis team, looking to bounce back from its first losing season since 1986, will face an exciting dual match and tournament schedule during the 1999-2000 season. Coach Sam Paul returns a veteran team which struggled against last year's brutal schedule, posting an 11-14 mark.
But five of the team's six singles starters return from last season and Coach Paul, entering his seventh year at the helm of the Tar Heels, has added five outstanding recruits to the Tar Heel roster, which now has great depth with 13 players on the 1999-2000 team. Besides the rigorous tournament schedule the Tar Heels will play in the fall and in the early part of the spring, Carolina has schedule a tough 18-contest dual match schedule. Carolina tennis fans in Chapel Hill will have plenty to look forward to as 13 of the 18 matches will be played at the friendly confines of the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
"I know everyone in our program is looking forward to this year. We were so young last year that in many instances we were simply outmatched. We will miss our #1 player from last year, Mike Grass, who had a great senior year for us, but with eight lettermen back and five newcomers there will be great competition for playing time. That alone will make us a better team in 1999-2000," says Paul.
